Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals Industry Looks Toward Growth in 2005
cPMP conference to highlight coming age of PMPs.
Montreal, Canada (PRWEB via PR Web
Direct) January 27, 2005 -- As the plant-made pharmaceutical industry looks
toward what may be a watershed year in its development, leading representatives
of the industry from the U.S., Europe, Canada and Asia are gathering to discuss
the opportunities on the horizon and the responsible management of the
technology.
The Conference on Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals 2005, which will
bring together representatives of some 30 PMP companies and major pharmaceutical
corporations from around the world, will include sessions examining plant-made
pharmaceuticals from perspectives of business, regulation, science and
stewardship.
Major events at the conference, to be held from Jan. 30-Feb.
2 at Montreal’s Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, will include the release of
results of research conducted on PMPs by the International Alliance of Patient
Organizations on behalf of patient-advocacy groups, and a discussion of
industry-wide policies and procedures to regulate the production of PMPs.
"The plant-made pharmaceuticals sector has at least
doubled in the past two years,” said conference organizer François Arcand. “In
2005 we expect to see major steps forward regarding the involvement of major
pharmaceutical companies in PMPs, drug candidates approaching commercialization,
increased public financing and regulatory discipline. This conference will be
the launching point for much of it.”
Conference hosts include Grand Hosts
Bayer CropScience, Dow AgroSciences, Nexgen (Korea) and Syngenta, along with
Hosts including Chlorogen, Icon Genetics, Medicago, Meristem and SemBioSys
Plant-made pharmaceuticals are gaining increasing
attention for their potential to aid in the production of therapeutic proteins
to treat diseases such as cancer, HIV, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s
disease, arthritis and many more.
The Conference on Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals is organized by the Society for
Moleculture, a non-for-profit organization. Its mission is to disseminate
information about moleculture and to support the emergence of a manufacturing
sector using plant-factories to produce biopharmaceuticals, industrial products
and other useful molecules.
