Movement Discoveries Pediatric Therapy Center-No. California’s Parent-Founded Intensive Therapy Center for Children with Cerebral Palsy Celebrates First Year Anniversary
Movement Discoveries Pediatric Therapy Center, a parent-founded rehabilitation center in Northern California for children with neuromuscular disorders such as Cerebral Palsy, celebrates its first year of operation.
Burlingame, CA (PRWEB) February 2, 2005 -- The center was founded by parents
Mary Ann and Wayne Hauck whose six-year old daughter Amber has Cerebral Palsy
and is the driving force in the creation of this unique rehabilitation center.
One year ago this month the center opened its doors to provide to an innovative
physical therapy program that has already helped many children around the world
including their own daughter achieve motor skills they have never been able to
do before, such as rolling, crawling, or walking. (www.movementdiscoveries.com)
The Haucks were frustrated
by the lack of adequate physical therapy program for their daughter and were
searching for an alternative. Typically, children like her only receive 1 to 2
hours per week of physical therapy. Their search took them all the way to Poland
in 2002 where their daughter participated in an intensive program for 3 ˝ hours
per day for 4 weeks. Amber, a spastic quadriplegic, was not able to weight bear
with severe extension reflex and poor immune system. At the completion of her
participation the Hauck’s were amazed at her strength gain, ability to bend her
legs voluntarily for sitting, and remarkable improvement in health.
One
year later they met Richard and Izabela Koscielny, both Polish physical
therapists who came from the center in Poland, and also parents of a child with
cerebral palsy. They developed the Therasuit (an orthotic device) and trained
therapists the intensive therapy method now used in over 40 centers in the US.
The Haucks became excited at the possibility of having this intensive therapy
program readily available for their daughter and thus began the relationship
with the Koscielny’s – a year later Movement Discoveries Pediatric Therapy
Center was born.
During the past year the center has seen children crawl,
stand independently, walk with walker or walk independently for the first time
in their lives. The 4 hour/day, 5 days/week, over 3-week program puts children
through a rigorous exercise, strengthening, and functional skills work. Children
do achieve their goals at a faster rate than in traditional therapy. The
physical therapists working with the children are licensed in the State of
California and have been certified in the Therasuit Method.
The center
also provides therapy services for children to manage conditions such as
torticollis, scoliosis, pre- and post- surgical interventions such as botox,
osteotomy, tendon lengthening, spinal fusion and selective dorsal
rhizotomy.
