Healis Opens Certified Tomatis Listening & Learning Center in Palmetto Bay, Florida
First Tomatis Certified Center in Florida to Treat Autism, ADD and Learning Disabilities
Miami, FL (PRWEB) May 11, 2005 -- Healis, a full service rehabilitation and
wellness center, announced today the opening of its Listening and Learning
Center. The Healis Listening and Learning Center is the first certified Tomatis
Center in the state dedicated to providing advanced therapeutic methods and
cognitive interventions.
The Healis Listening and Learning Center
creates custom designed treatments for patients, including special needs
children that help them overcome communication, behavioral and learning
difficulties. Healis Listening and Learning Center combines sensory integration,
auditory stimulation and cognitive enhancement methods to help patients
with:
• Attention Deficit Disorders
•
Autism and PDD
• Auditory Processing Problems
• Cerebral Palsy
• Developmental
Delays
• Learning Disabilities
•
Sensory Integration Disorders
Healis Listening and Learning Center makes
a clear distinction between hearing and listening. Hearing is a passive process
that merely detects the sounds around us. Listening is a specialized form of
hearing and is the primary function of the ear. Listening is an active process
that facilitates learning and requires the conscious desire to determine the
meaning of what we hear.
“To become a good learner, one has to become a
good listener. Tomatis has developed a highly effective method to teach people
with various disabilities to become good listeners, and thereby a better
learner,” said Lisa Galvez, co-founder, Healis Listening and Learning Center.
“We can have excellent hearing but be poor listeners. Many children with
learning difficulties or attention deficit have excellent hearing, according to
the school audiologist, but still cannot read well or concentrate. Their problem
is a listening problem, not a hearing problem,” added Galvez.
Healis
Listening and Learning Center is the first Tomatis certified center in Florida
and provides patients and families with a proven European method of listening
and learning. Healis has hired Roman Zalac (OTR/L), a certified Tomatis
consultant, who was trained in the Solisten technologies used for listening and
hearing enhancement. Zalac has more than 5 years experience as a children’s
occupational therapist. “I’m excited by the opportunity of brining the Tomatis
techniques, proven in many European countries to Miami to help learning disabled
children overcome their communication and learning difficulties,” said Zalac.
The Tomatis treatment, developed in Europe by Dr. Tomatis, includes
custom designed workout for one’s ear using an “electronic ear” a machine which
filters Mozart’s music, Gregorian Chants and the mother’s voice, forcing the
middle ear to engage in sound analysis. The exposure to filtered sounds creates
an in-uterus environment and the progressive de-filtering of presented sounds
allows the ear to develop a natural progression toward normal hearing.
The length of treatments depends on the individual needs and progress of
the patients, but generally it consists of 15 days of intensive therapy,
followed two 8-day treatment periods with 4-6 week interval between sessions.
