The unpredictable economy and world situation. More hours at work with less help. Family duties. Ongoing relationships with fellow workers, spouse and self, and other obligations…All can create a crisis of meaning in our daily work and personal lives, notes St. Paul native and psychologist Thèrése Jacobs-Stewart, in her debut book, Paths Are Made By Walking: Practical Steps to Attaining Serenity Using Spiritual and Emotional Intelligence at Home, at Work and in Life (AOL Time Warner Books, 256 pgs.). Paths offers more than 20 proven contemplative exercises from the early Christian and ancient Eastern spiritual traditions within the framework of Western psychology, providing proven practical ways to reduce the stress, fear and noise of uncertain times like these in a simple, non-sectarian manner that is validated by modern science.

NEW PATHS ARE MADE BY WALKING BOOK EXPLORES THE SCIENCE OF SPIRITUALITY AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE; PSYCHOLOGIST THÉRÈSE JACOBS-STEWART’S DEBUT WORK PROVIDES MORE THAN 20 ANCIENT CONTEMPLATIVE TOOLS FOR CONTEMPORARY WORK, HOME AND LIFE THAT CAN ALTER BRAIN CHEMISTRY AND ENHANCE RELATIONSHIPS WITH SELF AND OTHERS

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The unpredictable economy and world situation.

“Contemporary science has identified the amygdala (ah-mig-dah-lah) as the brain’s emotional processing center where our emotional responses to situations affect how we behave, or react to different situations,” says Jacobs-Stewart. “But that same pioneering brain science also has revealed what the spiritual teachers of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths alongside the Christian saints have known through the centuries: That by using a daily practice or meditation, we can physically alter our neuropathways in the brain to change harmful or negative emotional states and ultimately enhance our relationships with self and others, whether at work, at home or in life.”

PATHS features over 20 exercises to help readers conquer fear and stress, resolve conflict, and develop leadership qualities. These exercises include:

·    Simple breathing patterns that through practice can actually change the pace of your day
·    Scanning the body for tension spots which can lead to a self-diagnosis of chronic problems because as soon as you tune into your body the cause of pain becomes obvious
·    Learning to assert limits with a difficult person and effectively gain the energy wasted in that relationship
·    Visualizing the effects of anger and hatred from the teachings of the Dalai Lama who said, “When we think about these negative and destructive effects of anger and hatred, we realize that it is necessary to distance ourselves from emotional explosions.”
·    Exchanging yourself with another causing an advanced sense of empathy and conflict resolution

Exercises such as these and keeping a personal log, in which readers record emotional triggers, will lead you along the path. Thérèse Jacobs-Stewart creates a unique synthesis of science and the study of spirit that explains the phenomenon of the emotional brain and, more importantly, shows us how to reap the valuable rewards of using it everyday to calmly deal with the frustrations of daily life with grace and wisdom.

About Thérèse Jacobs-Stewart

A colleague of authors Daniel Goleman and Annie McKee, whose groundbreaking work on emotional intelligence is reshaping the corporate and self-help worlds, Jacobs-Stewart has been practicing as a licensed psychologist for more than 20-years. But her life-long learning -- combined with her professional work with world organizations and companies such as The United Nations, Unilever International, 3M, Northwest Airlines, Roland Berger and Partners, London and others – makes her an innovative leader and mindful agent for growth and change.

Jacobs-Stewart has personally studied with Zen monks in Nepal, the Dali Lama in India, the Christian contemplatives of a Carmelite hermitage in Arizona, and the Sisters of the Cenacle in Chicago. Using her personal journey, professional experience and spiritual training, Jacobs-Stewart also provides rich and rewarding programs as the principal in MindRoads, a community of professionals dedicated to helping people make deeper connections to mind, body and heart through coaching and mentoring, retreats and workshops.

MindRoads is based in Minneapolis-St.Paul and at www.mindroads.com. Its first workshop for the general public will be held in August (check website for more details).

Although bookshelves are flooded with guides to spiritual and emotional development, none provide the same practical approach of Paths Are Made By Walking: “I wanted this book and its practices to be readily accessible so I’ve translated the many exercises into everyday language, making them easy to understand,” explains the author. “Whether readers are of the Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, or Hindu faith, atheists, or simply curious about spiritual matters, anyone can use these exercises to effectively manage their emotions and build more skillful relationships with themselves and others.”
