(PRWEB) August 4, 2005 -- The 4th Annual FACES Conference will be held in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania September 9 -11 2005. (FACES = Friends And
Caregivers, Encephalitis Survivors.) The organizers strive to raise awareness on
the topic of encephalitis.
Wendy Station, President of Encephalitis
Global Inc. states, "It seems as long as I can remember, encephalitis would be
occasionally mentioned on television, or in the
newspaper. Eastern equine encephalitis, western equine
encephalitis, then St. Louis, Japanese and LaCrosse encephalitis. I never much
took note... NIMBY(Not In My Back Yard) I’d think. Then, back in 1999, West Nile
hit North America. Most people got nothing but the flu, but some of them got
West Nile encephalitis. Makes ‘em a bit woozy for a while, I
guessed.
"Then, disaster struck in April 1999, when encephalitis hit in
my own backyard. Hit me, actually. My encephalitis was not vector-borne (not
from an insect bite), but it certainly did drag my family through frustration
and sorrow, as they tried to understand. After four weeks in hospital, I was
returned home to be babysat by my parents. At that point, I couldn’t figure out
how to find a spoon in my own kitchen."
Encephalitis means inflammation
of the inner area of the brain. Once that swelling subsides, recovery takes
place in the following years, as damaged areas of the brain struggle to pick up
the pieces. The survivor strives to re-learn the knowledge lost... with
different levels of success.
The theme of the 2005 FACES Encephalitis
Conference is "New Beginnings." FACES will be held September 9-11 2005, in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Previous Conferences have welcomed guests from all
over North America, as well as from India and the United Kingdom.
