Revolutionary Organ Transplant Device & The Colorado
Connection
Englewood, CO (PRWEB) August, 2003 – Wi, Inc., an
Englewood-based Medical Device Development company, announced that the U. S.
Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has given clearance to market the LifePort™
Kidney Transporter, developed by Organ Recovery Systems in partner with Wi. Wi
was honored to be selected as a team member, and participated in critical
aspects of the project.
Wi, in taking the project from concept through
and into production, was responsible for developing the disposal set of the
Kidney Transporter, including the kidney container and disposable perfusion set,
with special emphasis on the hardware/disposal interface. Wi’s participation in
the project was unique in that it offered both product and process development.
“Portable, durable and easy-to-use, the LifePort™ Kidney Transporter is
the first in a new generation of devices specifically designed to establish a
continuum of organ care that spans the critical time between recovery and
transplantation. LifePort™ provides a high tech alternative to the conventional
static method of organ storage and transportation—a cooler filled with ice.
Perfusion is the gentle pumping of an organ with a physiologic solution as a
pre-treatment for transplantation”, states the Organ Recovery System press
release.
According to the United Network of Organ Sharing, over 55,000
Americans are currently waiting for a kidney transplant. The United States Renal
Data System believes the kidney waiting list could double in the next ten years.
Lee Travis, Lead Project Engineer for Wi stated, “It is exciting to be a
part of this revolutionary new product, which will increase the viability of
kidneys available for transplant”.
