Mayor Recognizes Bellaire Rotarians by Proclaiming “Immunization Day”
Bellaire Mayor Cynthia Siegel opened the August 1, 2005, Regular Session of City Council by proclaiming that August 6, 2005, shall be observed as “Bellaire/Southwest Houston Rotary Immunization Day” in recognition of the Rotary Club’s commitment to immunizing underprivileged children in the Bellaire / Southwest Houston area. opened the August 1 Regular Session of City Council by proclaiming that August
6, 2005, shall be observed as “Bellaire/Southwest Houston Rotary Immunization
Day” in recognition of the Rotary Club’s commitment to immunizing
underprivileged children in the Bellaire / Southwest Houston area.

offices accepted the Presentation Certificate on behalf of the
club.
Siegel congratulated Rotarians on almost 50 years of civic
volunteerism, including the recent “Flags Over Bellaire” program, then
characterized the club’s immunization-coalition as “a model for future
beneficial community partnerships.”
The club unveiled a new Public
Service Awareness poster for the August 6th event, warning: "Chicken pox can be
more than just miserable. . . Stopping preventable killers is a Rotary
'thing'."
In addition to free vaccinations on Immunization Day, Rotarians
will provide participants and families with refreshments, games, and
entertainment, school supply vouchers, health information, height / weight and
body mass calculations, and goody bags.
Registration for Immunization
Day is open to all members of the public, but space is limited. Potential
participants should pre-register, in person, at the Office of Holy Ghost
Catholic Church during normal hours of operation in order to receive a confirmed
registration number on a first-come, first-served basis and specific
instructions for participating in Immunization Day.
Holy Ghost is
located at 6921 Chetwood, Houston, TX 77081. Rotarians will provide referral
information to any persons unable to be accommodated on event day.
The
Gulfton Immunization Initiative is sponsored by Bellaire / SW Houston Rotary,
whose coalition participants include Holy Ghost Catholic Church & School,
the Archdiocese of Galveston / Houston, Westland YMCA, St. Luke’s Episcopal
Health Charities Mobile Medical Clinic, and local merchants who donate
gifts/services.

Proclamation:
Whereas., since its founding almost 50
years ago the Rotary Club of Bellaire Southwest Houston has contributed
significantly to the health, well-being, life quality, and education of the
citizens of the City of Bellaire, Texas, through generous donation of funds and
hands-on volunteer services, including the recent “Flags Over Bellaire” program
and their support of community branches of such groups as the Westland YMCA, the
FFA, the Boys and Girls Clubs, Braes Inter-faith Ministries, Southwest 2000,
numerous local middle, elementary, and high schools, city parks and recreational
areas; and
Whereas. the health and well-being of Bellaire’s citizenry is
greatly impacted by the level of health awareness and vaccination-coverage in
our community, both within and outside of our municipal boundaries;
and
Whereas., the City of Bellaire encourages civic volunteerism,
involvement of all residents in improving our community and quality of life, and
innovative actions by citizen coalitions to promote the public good; and
Whereas,. Bellaire Southwest Houston Rotary has sponsored a community
coalition comprised of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Holy Ghost School, the
Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the Espiritu de Saluda (Spirit of Health)
Mobile Clinic, Christ Church Cathedral, Rusk School Health Project, St. Luke’s
Episcopal Health Charities, and YMCA International Services \ Westland, for the
purpose of fielding an Immunization Initiative in Bellaire on August 6, 2005;
and
Whereas. the August 6 Gulfton Immunization Day Clinic will combine
free immunizations with health education activities, refreshments,
entertainment, and financial assistance for back-to-school supplies, thereby
increasing immunization coverage and health education in what has been
identified as Houston’s most densely populated and ethnically diverse community;
and
Whereas. the Rotary immunization-coalition is a model for future
beneficial community partnerships; and
Whereas, Bellaire Southwest
Houston Rotary’s Gulfton Immunization Day Clinic will mark the first use in the
Bellaire / Southwest Houston area of St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities’
Espiritu de Salud mobile medical clinic thereby securing for the citizens of
Bellaire significant benefits that include free inoculation of over 200 of its
residents against vaccine-preventable diseases on August 6th;
Now,
Therefore, I, Cynthia Siegel, Mayor of the City Of Bellaire, Texas, do hereby
proclaim Saturday, August 6, 2005, as:
Bellaire/ Southwest Houston Rotary
Immunization Day
in Bellaire, Texas, and encourage all citizens to join
me in recognizing this outstanding service club for its dedication to improving
the human condition in our community.
