Intradyn Adds Tape Encryption to Email Archiving Appliance
New Technology Offers ‘Strong Encryption’ for Archived Data, Providing Best Possible Protection Against Data Loss, Theft, or Unauthorized Access to Sensitive Information
Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) June 21, 2005 -- Intradyn announced today at the
annual Securities Industry Association (SIA) Technology Management Conference in
New York City that it will begin offering technology that encrypts tapes used to
archive sensitive corporate email. The company’s Encryptape™ technology is based
on the same type of encryption used by the U.S. federal government, the highest
level available, which is AES 256-bit – called “strong
encryption.”
Regulations requiring that certain data be retained for long
periods, often several years, are proliferating. At the same time, it has become
clear that the loss or theft of tapes containing such data is a significant
problem for organizations, large and small. Millions of people are now affected
by data that has been lost on unencrypted tapes, by organizations such as Time
Warner and CitiFinancial, for example. The former divulged recently that
sensitive data on 600,000 current and former employees was stored on tapes lost
by a supplier, while the latter reported in May that it lost tapes containing
sensitive data on 3,900,000 customers.
Intradyn is specifically making
this new 256-bit AES WORM tape encryption technology available as part of the
software incorporated in its ComplianceVault™ Email Archiving Appliance, which
it co-markets with Sony (NYSE: SNE). See http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/5697. The Encryptape™
software for the ComplianceVault™ will be available beginning this month to
existing users as a free upgrade, and will be widely available from Sony
solution providers and select distributors. It will also be available in a
soon-to-be-released, next-generation version of Intradyn’s RocketVault™ Backup
Appliance.
“Our customers began asking for full encryption on removable
media shortly after we released the ComplianceVault™ in 2004, and the requests
increased immediately after Time Warner lost their tapes,” said Gary Doan,
Intradyn CEO. “Those requests jumped dramatically after CitiFinancial announced
it lost millions of records. Companies realize that the damage this kind of
episode causes is significant, and the liability potentially
catastrophic.”
Analyst Comments
“Keeping unencrypted tapes at either
primary or secondary sites these days seems almost criminal – and in some cases,
probably is. With this free option to the ComplianceVault™, it is likely that
some SMB sites will now be protecting their corporate data better than some of
their Fortune 500 competitors,” said Mike Karp, senior analyst at Enterprise
Management Associates.
“Intradyn's ComplianceVault™ supports the
functionality needed to enable compliance at a digestible price for sensitive IT
budgets,” said Peter Gerr, a senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy
Group.
Product Description
Intradyn’s ComplianceVault™ appliance is an
integrated hardware/software solution that captures all of a user company’s
email on a continuous basis, from a virtually unlimited number of mailboxes –
storing all email messages on both hard disk and unalterable media (Sony® AIT
WORM tape). The product is an easy-to-use appliance that connects quickly to the
network to give smaller firms powerful email search and retrieval capabilities.
It works with Microsoft® Exchange™, Lotus Notes®, Novell Groupwise®, or any IMAP
or POP3 email server. It can be quickly installed, requires no integration or IT
expertise, and allows the administrator to search the content of up to one
million emails per second by keywords, date or range of dates, or by
mailbox/user. In addition, the device has an audit feature that tracks all
access to the system.
Who Must Archive Email?
North American firms in
the financial services sector, which are regulated by the Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC), the National Association of Securities Dealers
(NASD), or the Universal Market Integrity Rules for Canadian Marketplaces, must
follow a detailed and stringent set of guidelines for data retention. Firms in
the healthcare industry must follow data retention requirements specified by a
variety of statutes and regulatory bodies, including the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Medicare Conditions of
Participation, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Government agencies
and ministries must adhereto a wide variety of guidelines and requirements for
data retention, including those put forth by National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), the Department of Defense (DOD), various provisions in
the United States Code, the National Archives of Canada, and other agencies and
statutes, including several state statutes, often called “open records
laws.”
Email and Archiving Growth Statistics
According to the
Enterprise Strategy Group, “reference information,” the majority of which is
email and attachments, is growing at a 92% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR),
while database and transactional data is growing at only a 61% CAGR. The IDC
Berkeley Report says that storage requirements for email will grow at a
projected compounded annual growth rate of between 100 and 300% through
2005.
Worldwide revenues for email archiving software increased to $180
million in 2004, and the compounded annual growth rate will be 50% for revenues
in this market segment over the next three years, according to IDC. The Radicati
Group says the category of email archiving and retrieval software will see
revenue growth of more than $2.3 billion by 2008. IDC says that the broader
global market for “compliance information management” will grow at a 22%
compounded annual growth rate through the 2005 to 2009 period, and pass the $20
billion mark for the first time in 2009.
