More Than Ever Before, Baby Boomers Are Struggling To Care For Aging Family Members
Full Circle is providing a helping hand with 10 caregiving tips perfect for summer.
Fullerton, CA (PRWEB) July 11, 2005 -- If you are caring for an aging family
member or friend, you are not alone! It is estimated that 80% of all care
received by seniors is provided by family members – spouses, children,
grandchildren and other relatives. During any given year, more than 50 million
people provide care, and demands placed on a family are likely to escalate,
affecting nearly every American family.
Today, Full Circle a member of
the largest network (The Senior’s Choice Network) of independent businesses
providing non-medical companion services to seniors, announces ten tips for
summer to assist family caregivers:
1)Make sure your loved one drinks 6-8
glasses of water a day as dehydration can be deadly and always make sure the
home has proper ventilation or air conditioning.
2)Don’t let seniors wait
in the car while you run errands. Cars heat up quickly (even faster in summer
months) to oven-like temperatures and seniors are very vulnerable to
heat.
3)Always keep plenty of prepared fresh fruits, vegetables and
nutritious snacks in the house because many seniors don't like to cook for
themselves, but if there is good food to nibble on, they'll still be eating
healthy.
4)Leave your contact information and emergency phone numbers
near every phone in the house, and remember to update them should anything
change.
5)Keep a list of all medications, dosages and times to take
them, as well as a list of all the senior's medical conditions posted on the
refrigerator door. Don’t forget to update it whenever the doctor makes a change.
6)When planning a vacation and leaving a family member at home, be sure
to have a neighbor or friend stop by daily, and twice a day if they
can.
7)While traveling, don’t forget to call home every couple of days
and send postcards from points of interest. Seniors appreciate the help of
friends and neighbors but it doesn't take the place of contact with the ones
they love.
8)Arrange for your loved one to get to regular activities
(through a friend or companion service even in your absence) because they do not
want to sit at home all day when they could be out doing things they
enjoy.
9)Make sure you understand your family member’s beliefs, wishes
and philosophy about life and death. Know where all the important documents are
when the need arises.
10)Spend time talking with your loved ones, not
just about the weather and current events, but about their lives and record the
information for other family members. This will leave a beautiful legacy and
provide a host of memorable experiences that will not only enrich the senior’s
life, but yours as well.
