Cancer Patients Complain of Loss of Intimacy
Cancer patients and their partners are reporting a decided lack of 'whoopee'. Sometimes due to the myth that cancer can be infectious or because loved ones are frightened to touch in case of causing pain. Trish Duke, an International health educator gives practical and frank solutions to this common challenge.
(PRWEB) February 17, 2005 -- Cancer patients and their partners are reporting
a decided lack of ‘whoopee’in their love life. Believing the myth that they can
catch cancer from a partner or pass it on, couples are often in abstinence for
months or even years, adding unnecessary strain on an already stressful
situation.
As the treatments and medications are foremost on everyone’s
mind, the patients are loathe to ask the doctor questions like “ are we allowed
to have sex?” or “how can we adapt our sex life to a change in energy, body
image and libido?”
Health Educator, Trish Duke, who has 30 years of
International experience, teaches ‘cancer couples’ how to make sex comfortable
and fulfilling at any stage of their disease in a new patient information kit.
Trish says “bringing the subject into the open and offering practical
suggestions can relieve a great deal of stress, as well as giving much needed
romance and intimacy…….…not to mention fun!”
She continues, “Embarrassed
by scars or changes of body shape, patients often want to hide their flesh. This
is where an informed partner can woo their loved one with ‘sweet nothings’ and
genuine compliments, assuring them that they are still sexy and
desirable”.
Good communication between the couple can lead to innovative
sex and strengthen their relationship. Sometimes reverting to just kissing and
cuddling can be enough to keep the sparks alive or ignite a new bonfire!
Different lovemaking positions may be helpful to avoid discomfort or
breathlessness.
Touch deprivation is common in cancer patients, with
loved ones frightened to be physically affectionate with them in case they cause
pain. Research over the years has shown that from birth, if we do not have
enough appropriate loving touch our emotional health and pain tolerance suffers.
Not good when you are battling cancer.
This practical kit offers real
solutions for many of the other daily challenges that patients with major
diseases struggle with such as sleep, fatigue, stress, nutrition and exercise
etc
