Breakthrough Office Treatment Offers Women Permanent Reduction of Heavy Periods

Clinical studies demonstrate Microwave Endometrial Ablation (MEA)is the most effective office treatment for heavy periods. It is an appealing alternative to hormones or hysterectomy. Most women experience significantly lighter periods, and many never bleed again.

(PRWEB) March 8, 2005 -- Over one-third of all hysterectomies in the United States, approximately 200,000 each year, are performed for heavy periods. Yet many of these major operations, with their inherent risks, expense, and prolonged recovery; could be avoided. Many more women suffer tolerating their period interfering with social activities, work, exercise, or even intimacy. Women will often acquiesce, accepting a gradual increase in the amount and duration of their menstrual flow. They may falsely assume this is a normal part of aging. Commonly iron deficiency anemia occurs causing fatigue.

Microwave Endometrial Ablation, or MEA, is an appealing alternative to hormone treatments and hysterectomy. In clinical studies 96% of patients were satisfied with their results experiencing significantly lighter periods, and over 60% never experienced bleeding again! According to Dr. Scott Kramer board certified gynecologist at Women’s Health Specialists in Fremont, California; “Over the past 16 years I have performed endometrial ablations with a variety of devices. These clinical studies clearly demonstrate MEA is currently the most effective device and why we selected it to help our patients.”

MEA is a FDA approved treatment for heavy periods and has been utilized in Europe for 10 years. The system uses microwave energy to briefly heat the inner lining of the uterus, permanently removing the tissue that produces excess menstrual bleeding, without damaging other organs. This medical breakthrough takes less than 5 minutes to perform in the comfort of a doctor’s office. Most patients return to regular activities the next day, and it’s even covered by health insurance. Dr. Kramer reassuringly explains, “Unlike other types of endometrial ablations, we can avoid the anxiety of going to the operating room and also the risk of general anesthesia. We perform MEA in our office with local anesthesia which makes it more acceptable and less costly.”

MEA is an option for women who have completed their families and wish to minimize the disruption to their lives from their period. Last year Women’s Health Specialists was selected as the first gynecology practice in the San Francisco Bay Area to offer this solution for heavy periods. Women interested in learning more should schedule an appointment with Dr. Kramer. Additionally a free educational seminar will be held on Tuesday March 22nd in Fremont and Wednesday the 23rd in Pleasanton. Heavy periods are in the eye of the beholder and impact the quality of one’s life. Unfortunately too many women are only given hysterectomy as a solution to their undesired bleeding. “Women need to know their options and select what’s comfortable for them,” emphasizes Dr. Kramer. “In just a few minutes you can take control of your period.”
