San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 23
2003--¯For women who are unable to use hormonal birth control and do not want to
use intrauterine devices such as the IUD, the FemCap™ offers women what they
want—a non-hormonal, latex-free contraceptive device. Unlike the Diaphragm that
is worn for 24 hour, the FemCap™ can be worn for up to 48 hours at time and is
made of non-allergenic material. It is available at a low cost (typically $2–3
per month) and reusable for up to two years.
Recently approved by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the FemCap™ is considered by more than 75
percent of users to be more comfortable than the Diaphragm in clinical trials
funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
“The
FemCap is a futurist, effective mechanical barrier which covers the cervix
completely and potentially protects the cervix from the invading sperm, bacteria
and viruses,” according to its developer Dr. Alfred Shihata, a Scripps Health
physician of Family Medicine in San Diego, CA.
In addition, “the FemCap is
easy to use and free from side effects. Unlike the condom, the FemCap does not
interrupt spontaneity or reduce sexual pleasure because it must be inserted
before any sexual arousal, and it is entirely under the control of the woman,”
said Dr. Shitata.
Already available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and
Great Britain, the FemCap® is a vaginal contraceptive device with an anatomical
design that fits over the cervix like a glove.
This innovative birth
control device protects the cervix and prevents sperm from entering the uterus
thus protecting the user from pregnancy.
