Northridge, CA (PRWEB) August 31, 2004 -- Lara Takes Charge, was written as a
labor of love by Lang who has a 12 year old daughter with diabetes. Lang felt
that there was a need for empowering material dealing with the social challenges
that children living with diabetes face on a daily basis. He set out to create a
book that would inspire and deliver an optimistic and powerful message to
children all over the world, to feel like a normal kids.
Lara Takes
Charge, tells the story of a little girl who can do everything that all the
other kids do except she needs to check her blood sugar and she uses an insulin
pump. In the end, Lara says “Yes, I am normal as normal can be, I love just
being me.”
Feeling “normal” is an aspect that all children who are
challenged with a chronic illness face everyday. Lang was compelled to write the
book after he took his daughter to the doctor for her routine physical. When he
asked the nurse about the new nasal flu vaccine, she responded that his daughter
“had to be normal.” “I came away from that experience thinking about what
constituted normal and what these kids go though everyday doing all the “normal
things,” said Lang.
The book was illustrated by artist and writer, Sally
Huss, The Happy Book, I Love You With All My Hearts and Butterfly Kisses.
Lara Takes Charge, has been praised by the American Diabetes
Association, The Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, The American Association
of Diabetic Educators and in centers in Canada, New Zealand, and in The United
States. Dr. Kevin Kaiserman, Medical Director Clinical Diabetes Program,
Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles California says this about Lara Takes
Charge.
“This book goes straight to core of living with a chronic
illness. Every child wants to feel accepted and capable of achieving anything.
Thank you to Rocky and Sally for providing a positive and brilliantly
illustrated message for children living with diabetes.”
