DENVER, CO (PRWEB) June 26, 2004 -- MycoLogics, Inc., an innovative biotechnology company specializing in the development of novel antifungal drugs and therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines, today announced the receipt of patent 6,716,625, awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for the discovery of compositions and methods related to fungal histidine kinases and their use in screening compounds for antifungal activity, in addition to the development of antifungal compounds.

The present invention provides for the identification and development of antifungal compounds, as well as the treatment of subjects to eradicate, mitigate or prevent fungal infections. In particular, the patent provides for amino acid and nucleotide sequences of fungal histidine kinases from pathogenic fungi such as Candida, and Aspergillus.

Despite the identification of the cell membrane, cell wall, and microtubule targets for antifungal action, antifungal development has been slow. The development of effective antifungal agents has lagged behind that of antibacterial agents thus, most agents toxic to fungi are also toxic to humans. MycoLogics, Inc. is committed to filling the critical and immediate need for new antifungals with mechanisms of action different from currently available technologies.

“The Company is very excited about this technology and we look forward to developing novel antifungals that specifically target fungal histidine kinases,” said Dr. Claude P. Selitrennikoff, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of MycoLogics, Inc.
