Fort Lauderdale's "Health Colonel" Detained by OAS Conference Security
Security contingent for the June 4th event greeted the health expert with "Show me your hands!"
Fort Lauderdale Beach, FL (PRWEB via PR
Web Direct) June 23, 2005 -- Returning from his weekly Saturday "Beach Boot
Camp" workout for civilians, local celebrity and health expert Retired Lt. Col.
Bob Weinstein, known as the Health Colonel, was stopped by over 10 law
enforcement vehicles with sirens blazing. Although faced with a startling
experience, the retired military instructor, personal trainer and motivational
speaker applauds the area's law enforcement team.
On route home at 10:30
a.m., about a mile away from the Organization of American States (OAS)
conference on June 4, 2005, Col. Weinstein was flagged down in downtown Fort
Lauderdale by a Pembroke Pines Police car with lights flashing. Dressed in his
trademark workout attire of camouflage pants, combat boots, military backpack
and pistol belt, Col. Weinstein was greeted by 100 police officers in full riot
gear after pulling over and dismounting his black Kawasaki
motorcycle.
Col. Weinstein remembered, "After I removed my helmet and
military backpack, I looked behind me and noticed a multitude of police officers
in riot gear and that law enforcement vehicles had me surrounded. With my hands
up, I identified myself as a United States Army Reserve, retired, and told them
I was on my way back from a military-style workout at the beach."
After
running his driver's license and military ID, answering a few questions and
undergoing a backpack search, all items were returned.
"Once it was
clear that I was not a threat, the officers referenced the OAS conference and we
all exchanged pleasantries. I understand the need for heightened security during
this important event and respect the professionalism, courtesy and
responsibility of the Pembroke Pines and Miramar Police forces," Col. Weinstein
explained. "In fact, the next morning, when I was eating breakfast at a coffee
shop on the Fort Lauderdale Beach, about twenty law enforcement vehicles passed
me on the street dressed in my street clothes, and proceeded to greet me by
loudspeaker and salute as they passed. It was an unusual yet exciting way to
make a lot of new friends."
