Walk California Takes on 350 San Francisco Stairways, One Neighborhood at a Time
Walk California member Laura Glatstein is taking a local walking diva's book to heart. Adah Bakalinsky and her book, "Stairway Walks in San Francisco" is on the shelf of many a San Franciscan. Every Saturday, for the next 24 weeks, Laura and other Walk California members are on a quest to tackle over 350 stairways in the city of San Francisco.
(PRWEB) July 15, 2005 -- Walk California member, Laura Glatstein has a goal
in mind and won't stop until she completes the mission. Every Saturday, through
the end of 2005, Laura and other Walk California members will walk thousands of
steps and climb hundreds of stairways in the city of San Francisco.
The
inspiration behind Laura's undertaking is Adah Bakalinsky and her book,
"Stairway Walks in San Francisco." In the book, Bakalinsky maps out two dozen
walking paths and provides detailed step-by-step directions to over 350
stairways in San Francisco. Her tours include many fascinating details of
architectural, historical, and horticultural significance. The "Stairway" book,
first published in 1984, has recently been re-released as a special 20th
Anniversary Edition. Adah, a cherished San Francisco resident, is a recent
recipient of the Robert C. Friese Award for Neighborhood
Conservation.
Scott Blumin, founder of Walk California says, "Laura's
dedication to hosting all twenty-four walks from Adah's book demonstrates the
ultimate commitment to San Francisco. Not only is she honoring Adah Bakalinsky,
the queen of San Francisco's stairways, but she is also demonstrating the power
of volunteer service to connect with the community, build a healthier lifestyle,
reach fitness goals, and explore local areas."
